Despite the vocal concerns of many involved in the European electronics industry, the implementation of the RoHS Directive on the 1st July appears to have passed without the major horror stories that many predicted. But Adam Fletcher, Chairman of AFDEC, is sure that many individual organisations have encountered problems, either in sourcing or with compliance.Fears of a Y2K ‘meltdown’ scenario leading to huge problems for the electronics industry haven’t materialised, at least not yet, but implementation of the RoHS Directive has only just started. Unlike the predicted Y2K problem where systems would either work or fail, RoHS is an ongoing obligation to comply with the legislation. I fear problems and issues could well become apparent in the coming months. More
